These early works by Lucy Maud Montgomery where originally written in the early 20th century and we are now republishing them with a brand new introductory biography. 'Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories, 1896 to 1901' is a collection of tales that include 'A Case of Trespass', 'A Strayed Allegiance', 'Kismet', and many more. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. I've been an ardent admirer of Maud for many years. I have almost all of her novels, as well as her journals and biography. Needless to say, I was excited when I saw that all of her short stories were collected by chronological order. However, I find this book (and presumably the other ones in this series) to be poorly published. The stories go in alphabetical order, not chronological, and the font is small and cramped, making it a little difficult to read. There's no publisher information inside the book, and it feels like it was meant to be used as a research tool and not for pleasure reading, especially when compared to the collections edited by Rea Wilmshurst and others.Product details

Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories 1896 to 1901 edition by L M Montgomery Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is not my favorite collection of Montgomery's. Plot lines are acceptable, some stories are on the dark side, interesting use of characters that she develops more fully in other longer works. A study in how she reused personality traits and setting as well as descriptions throughout her writings with slight changes to achieve a different effect each time.
Although the typesetting for the edition is far from perfect, these stories shine through with classic Montgomery character. I only wish she had written more.
Such a good book. All her books are good reads, especially for the romantics at heart. ). And especially great that it's free!
Great collection of some L.M. Montgomery's short stories. This is full of her usual assortment of quirky, down-home, loyal, and loveable characters with honest and heart-warming stories.
There's several free collections of L.M. Montgomery's stories available on , and I recommend getting them all. There's a few new short stories hidden here and there that I've never seen in any of her published short story collections, and I own them all!
Most of the stories will be familiar, being in other published works, and you'll see Montgomery's tendency to re-use character names and themes standing out quite prominently if you've read a lot of her work. The chronologically older stories aren't of any less quality than her later works.
Here and there, some of the (common) racial, sexual and social prejudices of the day stand out a little jarringly for modern readers (women should be submissive to family/father, the French are lazy, Italians are hot blooded, athiests are lost/wicked, etc.), and you must brace for that when reading, if you're sensitive to such things.
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, justly famous for her novel "Anne of Green Gables", published over 500 short stories in her literary lifetime. Dodo Press has captured a selection of these short stories in chronological order in a six volume set, of which "Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories 1896 to 1901" is the first installment.
The twenty stories reprinted here are in the standard magazine short story format of the era. Characters and a point of dramatic tension are quickly introduced and the drama as quickly resolved, normally with a happy ending. However, L.M. Montgomery's talent as a writer is already evident in these early stories, which are populated with interesting characters, set in lushly described physical settings in Canada, and which often feature unique or unexpected plot twists.
The stories are by turns funny, whimsical, romantic, and even chilling. This reviewer especially enjoyed "The Red Room", an unexpected murder mystery, and "The Way of Winning Anne", in which a persistent bachelor finds a way to overcome the reluctance of the woman he has courted for some years.
"Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories 1896 to 1901" is very highly recommended to her fans, whc will enjoy watching a young artist at work.
