In Flying Fish, by Vern Hobbs, you can practically smell the mud flats at low tide and hear the sea gulls call. The characters who roam the streets and inlets of Juniper Key are as unique as the story and each one has quirks and issues the reader can strongly identify with. Flying Fish eBook Vern Hobbs Reviews
Very genuine, believable, story with fantastic character development.
"Flying Fish" is an entertaining and endearing story of a community about to lose its livelihood, its traditions and perhaps survival itself. It mirrors many small communities around the world in modern times. However this community decides it will fight back and learn to adapt and work together to save their town, Juniper Key, Florida. The people of this community have to examine some of their prejudices and ingrown habits and routines and decide to tolerate and sometimes even appreciate differences in their town. All of these activities are overseen by the ghost of a former resident that guides a new generation to keep this community alive and thriving. The author spends much of his time sailing the coastal waters of Florida and nearby locations and has a profound respect for the type of community like the imaginary Juniper Key. Insightful characters and the suspense of dealing with the vagaries of Mother Nature, greedy corporations and corrupt politicians make this book a good read.
An excellent read with unusal characters and stories within stories. A great adventure and an excellent idea for a gift.
I thought Mr. Hobbs first book was better. Flying Fish was good, but was story line was harder to follow and not as interesting as his first book.
Really enjoyed the book and the history of "old florida" and preserving it's history. Looking forward to the next book by Vern!!
This was a great read, touching on some current and relevant situations. The author did a fine job of developing his characters... I rather regretted seeing it come to an end.
Vern Hobbs has managed a classic, heartwarming, small-town-against-all-odds tale in "Flying Fish." The cast includes lovable characters ranging from salty fishermen to an alluring temptress who turns out to be more than meets the (roving) eye. Juniper Key is a place the reader won't want to leave, and I found myself sad when it was time for my "vacation" to the tight-knit, tiny fishing town in Florida to end!
